Thanksgiving is almost here. Not only is it a time for getting together with loved ones, watching football, and eating a delicious meal, it is also a time for giving thanks. I love that there is a holiday dedicated to giving thanks. However, knowing the benefits of expressing gratitude, I wish that everyone would practice it every day.

How often do you give thanks for the big and small things in your life? Do you have a tendency to take things for granted until a significant event reminds you to be thankful for all that you have? It is easy for us to get caught in this trap. Here’s how to get out of it:

It can be anything: your favorite food, a modern-day convenience like running water or your smartphone, or your health. Now notice how you are feeling after expressing gratitude. Was there a shift in your mood? I’m hopeful that your mood has improved as a result of expressing thanks, as research shows that people who are grateful experience less depression and stress and are more satisfied with their personal relationships and life in general. Taking one minute each day to list things that you are thankful for can have a significant impact on your life. Give it a try and let me know how it works.

For my gratitude list today: I am grateful for surviving the first year of parenthood. I am grateful for the health of my loved ones. I am grateful for chocolate. I am grateful for the heat in my home and car on really cold days. Finally, I am grateful for my clients.
